Willie Geist to Today…
The New York Times’ Brian Stelter writes about Willie Geist going to The Today Show, which is now official…
The network confirmed that Mr. Geist would become a permanent presence on “Today,” where he has regularly filled in for Matt Lauer this year.
His impending appointment was first reported last month.Mr. Geist is currently the host of the irreverent 5:30 a.m. newscast “Way Too Early” and a co-host of the 6-to-9 a.m. “Morning Joe” on MSNBC, a favorite of political junkies. He said in an interview that he will continue co-hosting the 6 a.m. hour of “Morning Joe” because he “wanted to keep a foot in the ‘Morning Joe’ political world.’”
Then, he said, “I’ll jog across the street and finish prepping for the 9 a.m. hour.” (The “Today” studio is in a building across 49th Street from MSNBC’s studio, both at Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan.)
“Way Too Early,” which was conceived by Mr. Geist three years ago, will continue, but with a new host. He or she has not been chosen.
And let the speculation begin on that. Who do you think will get the Way too Early gig? Poll question!
Update: Not a chance…

At least Willie will be able to move on from hearing Donny D. making stupid comments about Mitt Romney’s hair!
Hopefully, this will put Ryan Seacrest out to pasture for that Today Show job. My goodness, he was awful during the Olympics!

He’ll be getting a Y-chromosome transplant?

I don’t see any of those listed as a possible replacement for Geist on WTE.
Luke Russert would seem to be a natural fit; if he was also named as Willies replacement on Morning Joe; but I think NBC has bigger plans for him other than hosting a lead in show for MJ.
Also don’t think Willie staying on for the first hour of MJ is a long term plan. My guess it’s just a transitional move for a few months until he’s settled in over at ‘Today’ and a replacement has been named for him at MJ.
Other than Luke Russert, I can’t think of anyone, at MSNBC, who would be a really good fit to replace Geist. In a pinch Brian Sullivan, might be a OK choice. He can do I business, sports, some politics and a bit of entertainment and has been a good foil for Joe and Mika in his recent appearances.
As for Chetry, I agree with Spud – “Not a chance…”

I wasn’t a big fan of Willie Geist in the beginning but he has since grown on me. It is pretty sad that Morning Joe has devolved so much that Geist is the only grown-up at the table. I agree with pam, he is soooo much better than that pretty boy Seacrest. If Geist replaces Lauer, it indicates that Today still wants to have some semblance of a news show. If they replace Lauer with Seacrest, it will be stupid celebrity blather.

Figure it can’t be a woman – since she would immediately be seen as a challenger to Mika’s chair – figure someone a little less white than the current Morning Joe crew would help, someone who could be a thorn in the MJ crew’s side about how old and connected they are to the NY/DC scene.
