Mika and Joe to do Way Too Early?

Politico’s Dylan Byers writes that Mika and Joe will be doing Way Too Early when Willie Geist leaves the show.

Morning Joe co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski will switch-off hosting “Way Too Early,” the 30-minute show Geist launched in 2009 as a lead-in to MSNBC’s signature 6-to-9 a.m. morning program. Morning Joe producer Louis Burgdorf will provide on-air assistance.

This prompted MSNBC to send Politico a non-denial denial statement…

Willie has made a 5:30 a.m. wake-up call both informative and fun. “Way Too Early” has become must-see TV for the country’s morning treadmill enthusiasts. The show will continue, but no host has been determined. We have nothing to announce at this time.

The whole reason Way too Early was different from Morning Joe wasn’t just the format but the host as well. Putting on either Mika or Joe would dilute that uniqueness that differentiated it from the three hours which come after it. It would be a defensive move by MSNBC to preserve the half hour but ultimately it would be counterproductive. If MSNBC is serious about using Jor and Mika for that show it would be better served by extending Morning Joe rather than muddy the waters and sowing show brand confusion by putting them into the Way too Early format.

  1. Of all the solutions available, MSNBC coms up with one way too stupid.

  2. To make WTE work you need someone smart, funny, pleasant, with a easygoing disposition. I’ve always like Jonathan Capehart’s effort as a fill-in. Hilarious doing sports. But, he does have a day job.

  3. Way Too Early is a preview show for MJ, so I don’t see that there’s much of a brand to dilute. That said, I don’t see Mika and Joe agreeing to be dragged in a half hour early. Half the time Joe doesn’t even make it in at 6.

  4. Just extend First Look, and quit making First Look essentially a repeat of Early Today.

  5. No. They can’t do that. First Look is doing Early Today with timezone updates after that.

  6. cut morning joe one hour.

  7. hire jonathan capehart. he would be a grand person, for that type of formate etc…

  8. As you can see from my above comment, we are on the same team. At least on this.
