Are Maddow or Her Staff Spamming Twitter With Bogus Tweets? ICN Sez No…

This erupted overnight thanks to a post from NewsBusters’ P.J. Gladnick…

Perhaps Rachel Maddow can claim that the multiple twitter accounts plugging her show with identical words was the work of her staff and/or fans which was done entirely without her knowledge but she would definitely risk her pants bursting into flames. These multiple Twitter accounts with the copy and paste plugs of Maddow’s MSNBC show were revealed in this thread at the Free Republic:

A poster on Twitter, upon seeing what he thought were very similar posts referencing MSNBC host Rachel Maddow’s show, did some searching and found out that Maddow has been using phony twitter accounts to boost her “mentions” on the popular website.

As can be seen by screenshots collected by a tweeter named @LeftyBollocks, Maddow has massive amount of accounts posting the exact same claim that “Confession: I yell at my TV while watching Rachel #Maddow talk about filibuster reform in the same way most people do during football.”

And here is a screen shot of the suspicious Maddow Multiple Twitters:

Sounds ominous doesn’t it? ICN investigated…ok it wasn’t that much of an investigation…and I can confidently state that though there may be a tie-in between those tweets, nobody at MSNBC is behind them…

I randomly picked three of the Twitter accounts cited in the screengrab: This one, this one, and this one.

Looking at the individual feeds it’s obvious these are spam accounts, no doubt. They all have zero followers and a low total tweet count. They are full of random gibberish looking tweets. And they all make use of some weird hashtag called #TeamFollowback. So there is definitely a connection of some sort between the accounts.

But the nature of these timelines in my mind conclusively disproves the theory that Maddow, her staff, or anyone connected to MSNBC is behind them. They all violate NBC’s social media policy in one way or another…usually in the “objectionable word” category. If anyone at MSNBC used such language and were found out, they would be punished for sure…possibly even terminated.

More to the point, though, is the fact that if these accounts were supposed to boost the #Maddow hashtag they are doing a piss poor job of it. Looking at the three timelines above I couldn’t find a reference to MSNBC or Maddow. I didn’t go back in time too far but the point is I shouldn’t have to. If they wanted to promote Maddow’s show and this was an orchestrated attempt by MSNBC to do so I should be seeing LOTS of tweets referencing Maddow. The fact that I’m not is very significant.

My theory is that someone decided to put a Maddow tweet in and propogate it out to the other accounts in this cluster. But it was an outlier event, not indicative of the true nature of these feeds and their purpose. If it wasn’t for that one tweet, these accounts would be considered garbage accounts.

So the conspiracy theorists need to unrap their tinfoil hats and put them back in the drawer. There’s nothing sinister going on that I can see…

Update: MSNBC put out a tweet saying it’s not them…as I figured…

Spam on #maddow hashtag is not coming from the show or any producers. Have reached out to Twitter to investigate

Looks like spud fell for the denial. It’s not coming from the show or the producers. However, looks like they were careful to NOT deny it was coming from the network.
