MSNBC Should Fire Martin Bashir…

Meanwhile, while the TV world was focusing on something Alec Baldwin said on the fly in the heat of the moment, Martin Bashir was dumping something he planned in advance and was much much worse on the TV. NewsBusters’ Noel Sheppard has more…

MARTIN BASHIR: It’s time now to clear the air. And we end this week in the way it began – with America’s resident dunce, Sarah Palin, scraping the barrel of her long deceased mind, and using her all-time favorite analogy in an attempt to sound intelligent about the national debt.

SARAH PALIN: Our free stuff today is being paid for by taking money from our children, and borrowing from China. When that note comes due – and this isn’t racist, so try it. Try it anyway. This isn’t racist. But it’s going to be like slavery when that note is due.

BASHIR: It’lll be like slavery. Given her well-established reputation as a world class idiot, it’s hardly surprising that she should choose to mention slavery in a way that is abominable to anyone who knows anything about its barbaric history. So here’s an example.

One of the most comprehensive first-person accounts of slavery comes from the personal diary of a man called Thomas Thistlewood, who kept copious notes for 39 years. Thistlewood was the son of a tenant farmer who arrived on the island of Jamaica in April 1750, and assumed the position of overseer at a major plantation. What is most shocking about Thistlewood’s diary is not simply the fact that he assumes the right to own and possess other human beings, but is the sheer cruelty and brutality of his regime.

In 1756, he records that “A slave named Darby catched eating canes; had him well flogged and pickled, then made Hector, another slave, s-h-i-t in his mouth.” This became known as Darby’s dose, a punishment invented by Thistlewood that spoke only of the slave owners savagery and inhumanity.

And he mentions a similar incident again in 1756, this time in relation to a man he refers to as Punch. “Flogged Punch well, and then washed and rubbed salt pickle, lime juice and bird pepper; made Negro Joe piss in his eyes and mouth.” I could go on, but you get the point.

When Mrs. Palin invoked slavery, she doesn’t just prove her rank ignorance. She confirms that if anyone truly qualified for a dose of discipline from Thomas Thistlewood, then she would be the outstanding candidate.

If Baldwin merited two weeks for something that didn’t transpire over its air – being a hothead in public and not being able to control himself in the spur of the moment, then by MSNBC’s own scale Bashir should be fired outright…especially since his staff let this go out over the air when they had plenty of time to stop it from happening.

  1. I agree with you , Spud, but the difference is that Baldwin constantly uses g@y slurs in his tirades. That is unacceptable on MSNBC (as it should be) but using vulgarities in reference to Palin seems to be fine.

  2. Bashir should’ve been fired a long time ago.

  3. If this Palin rant gets Bashir fired I’m fine with that. Heck, they can fire him for almost anything and I’d be pleased.

Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s going to happen. A ‘I’m sorry if you were offended by what I said’ fake apology is most likely where were headed. I don’t even think he’ll get a suspension.

  4. A. Yes, a white American using a slavery reference against an African-American is deeply racist, and intentionally so. B. Bashir was out of line, and owes Palin an apology.

  5. Martin Bashir should “apologize” for allowing himself to be baited by someone who clearly gets her kicks from doing it. People like her could easily pick up a thesaurus, and find a word that suffices for “slavery”. They choose not to, because it’s a cheap and easy way to piss people off, and get some attention. You just know that she clapped her little flippers together when he said it.

  6. This so called reporter thinks that people (Sarah Palin)in particular should have someone dedicate in their mouth and urinate in their eyes for comparing debt to slavery. MSNBC needs to fire Martin Bashir for his stupidity, vulgarity, and encouraging his listeners to degrade women.

  7. Bashir must be deported back to Pakistan, who allowed him in to USA, did he buy his Green Card? Put Microsoft his sponsor in bankruptcy.

  8. ^ This should be fun.

  9. Send him back to Kenya!

Brian Williams, do you stand with Martin Bashir?
Chuck Todd, do you stand with Martin Bashir?
Andrea Mitchell, do you stand with Martin Bashir?
Tom Brokaw, do you stand with Martin Bashir?
David Gregory, do you stand with Martin Bashir?
Bob Costas, do you stand with Martin Bashir?
Matt Lauer, do you stand with Martin Bashir?
Lisa Meyers, do you stand with Martin Bashir?
Al Roker, do you stand with Martin Bashir?
Luke Russert, do you stand with Martin Bashir?
Pete Williams, do you stand with Martin Bashir?

Their silence shows their implicit endorsement of Bashir and his rhetoric. And should be remembered every time one of them complains about Republicans lack of civility.

  11. Obviously its either Palin’s of BusHitlers fault… says brilliant Laura

  12. I think the wiser choice for all of them is to stay out of it. Maybe someday we’ll find out what Martin Bashir really thinks of Sarah Palin.

  13. Most of those names don’t even work for MSNBC. Maybe Chris Wallace should answer for Sarah Palin, eh?

  14. A grievance is a terrible thing to waste.

  15. Martin Bashir is great a misinforming/misleading people. Any action like that can lead to more trouble, and could even have trust for those he works had trouble as well. He should either apologize or be fired for the mislead.

  16. Hannity and Brashir are one and the same.

  17. Laura: I think you’re way of on this one. I know you detest Palin but there’s absolutely no excuse for what bashir said. And it’s not new for him. It wasn’t long ago that msnbc advertised his program as a straight news show. Nobody would be this easy on Bashir if he were a conservative talker. It’s absurd.

  18. “Hannity and Brashir are one and the same”

Show me the instances of hate speech from hannity that remotely rival Bashir s weekly crazy.

    The hannity comparison is stupid

  19. Tommy Christopher wrote the story for mediaite with all the outrage that you would expect from that dishonest hack. .. which is to say none.

  20. bushleaguer Says:

Wow….he should be fired. Being a Liberal network is one thing…..I would imagine that nastiness like this would be a turnoff for even their most fervent viewers.

  21. CNN should bring Bashir and Palin on the Crossfire team.

  22. I’ve seen someone post tons of OWS pics with signs of them holding up debt is like slavery

Does Bashir also want shit & piss in their face?

  23. Martin Bashir suggests Sarah Palin ingest feces for a comparison he made in 2011

  24. Regarding Palin’s remarks – anytime you start off a commentary with “This isn’t racist…”, chances are you’re about to say something that’s blatantly and deliberately offensive. Palin’s nothing more than a snark queen. Personally, I wish the media hadn’t given her the attention she craves. Let the right wing idolize her and let her comments blow up when, and only when, the American right resonates with it and cheers her racism on – then it’s a story.

  25. Yes fire him he is disgusting and chauvinistic!

  26. Bashir went too far, but that blithering idiot was blatantly racist, and it’s bad for the country for rightwing loons like her to keep feeding that crap. She needs to shut up.

  27. I’m far less bothered by what Bashir said than I am about his employer’s apparent arbitrary enforcement of its rules of conduct, and that discipline is seemingly dished-out based upon a sense of political correctness to suit the moment. Yes, what he said was disgusting but what is so freakin’ horrible about hearing something disgusting once in a while?

As for what should or should not become of Bashir, whatever Palin said is irrelevant.

  28. Uh…stay on topic Joe. This is about what Bashir said, not what Palin did.

  29. Several people have reacted to what set Bashir off, and my comment immediately followed the most recent of those from Andy. I stated in that comment and an earlier one that I thought Bashir was wrong to say what he said.

  30. Palin used a metaphor that the left owns, so….”racist” and someone should sh!t in her face.

  31. He should probably be fired, but he won’t. And that is all you need to know about MSNBC. They hire Alec Baldwin, knowing his history of slurring g@ys, and may or may not discharge him after a repeat performance. Martin Bashir does a scripted, vile attack on an easy target, and to my knowledge, they’ve said nothing. Par for the course.

  32. I agree with Martin Bashir.

  33. I guess someone said something.
    johnny dollar ‏@johnnydollar01
RT @NoahCRothman: “A place where we try every day to elevate political discourse” – Martin Bashir apologizing for his Palin statement.

  34. I really don’t see the offensiveness of Bashir’s statements. Yep, it’s bold but definitely proves a point that constantly goes over the head of Sarah Palin. Slavery’s nothing like owing debt to China and oh by the way here’s a really raw example of why that is. Sometimes when you’re dealing with mornons like Palin, you have to be exceedingly blunt to make a point. Otherise, it just continues to go over their head.

  35. Well. If you’re going to apologize, that’s the way to do it. He not only flatout apologized personally to Palin and her family, but acknowledged that he needs to work on his approach in general. Good for him.

  36. It’s just so ironic, hypocritical really.
When the GOP, Republicans, & T-Baggers make
a racist, bigoted, or insulting statement it’s always a
big “JOKE” that the rest of us just don’t get?!?
But if someone on the left makes a comment or
statement that someone on the right takes the least
    bit of offense to……..
The flood of demands for an apology begins.
We must remember, freedom of speech is only
free to those on the right.
All the rest of us must PAY!

  37. Aw gee you guys. Martin only verbalized what my Jack Russell has been saying all along. (Yeah, me too).

  38. Martin Bashir. Another really good reason why multiculturalism should be outlawed.

  39. Martin Bashir is an idiot ! He is proof positive for the fact that liberals are intolerant.

  40. Don’t fire the little man, DEPORT HIM.

  41. Oh the stuff that was in Martin’s head just came out of his mouth. It happens all the time. To think MSNBC would fire a guy who constantly kicks up dung would be a ratings mistake. Heck I bet he got a bonus.
