Thomas Roberts Named Way Too Early Host…

The Daily Caller’s Alex Pappas scooped earlier today that Thomas Roberts will be taking over Way Too Early hosting duties. This is just the first domino that’s going to fall.

MSNBC has decided to replace the anchor of “Way Too Early” with the openly-gay Thomas Roberts because the left-leaning channel wants the show to be seen as more “diverse,” a source inside the cable network tells The Daily Caller.

The source said the move to replace current host Brian Shactman with Roberts will be announced soon.

“Way Too Early” airs every weekday morning before Morning Joe, the MSNBC daily talk show hosted by Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski.

  1. I imagine Brian Schactman will end up with a variety of duties at NBCSN.

  2. With Wagner moving to Bashir’s slot it leaves two dayside hours free to fill. One likely goes to Farrow. The question is does Joy Reid get the second?

  3. Unless Thomas Roberts keeps 11am.

I have a feeling they’re gonna end up having to replace Melissa Harris-Perry soon. MSNBC’s going to get hammered until she’s ousted. Although I’d like to see MSNBC stand behind one of its hosts for once… if they keep letting Conservatives who will never watch MSNBC to start with dictate their lineup, they’re gonna keep losing their core viewers.

^^As much as dislike MHP as a host I don’t think she’ll be fired or forced to resign. This is pretty small ‘scandal’ as these things go; so I expect she’ll apologize again on her show and we’ll move on.

If she were to go I hope they give the slot to Ezra Klein. Four hours of wonk on a Saturday/Sunday mornings (if you include UP with Steve Kornacki) would make me very happy.

There are also rumors out there that Klein might be leaving the WP to start his own major website, like Nate Silver did with 538. It would look good on MSNBC.com.

Does MSNBC need more opinion hours? I’d hope 10m and 11am stays a news hours.

Joy-Ann Reid is subbing for Lawrence tonight.

  6. “Does MSNBC need more opinion hours?”

It depends on what you call news and what you call opinion. If it’s a news hour like PBS Newshour, I’m all for it. If it’s just cycle of headline news mixed with human interest bits with no discussion or analysis then my answer is no.

If by opinion you mean Daily Rundown I’m all for it. If, on the other hand , your talking Schultz or Sharpton, no way.

  7. MSNBC needs to stand behind her, Fritz. It’s a non-story. If they keep firing people because Fox News trumps up a fake controversy, they’re not going to have any hosts or viewers left. Which is what FNC and conservative media wants – for left-leaning media to be silenced. Griffin needs to grow a set and stand behind MHP.

  8. I agree it’s a non story but then so are most of these scandals. People are usually fired in these events, not because of the thing that caused the scandal but rather, because of pre-existing conditions. KO and Baldwin are good examples of this.

My only point is that if they choose to fire her they should replace her with Klein.

I agree with that. Not something requiring a firing or resignation. Tarnishing MSNBC gets her enough punishment. Bashir was beyond the pale, and he had to go or he would have taken Griffin with him.

I am by no means an Alec Baldwin fan. However, if you listen very closely, he called the photographer a “maggot.” MSNBC was looking for an excuse.

  11. Same as with Olbermann, Baldwin was creating internal strife at MSNBC.

They should’ve known better than to hire him. Nothing good could come of it.

Said MSNBC source’s full time job is fertilizer salesman, skills that come in handy at the network.

  15. No,No…dont fire her. I think any news/opinion operator with Tampons hanging from here ears reflect the professionalism that is MSNBC and is beginning to reflect on NBC itself.

    Lets have more of it.

Perhaps they will have more info on the new Duck Dynasty play upcoming – titled “The Anus Monolouges”

    – Thomas Roberts will be narrating follow up.

I didn’t realize WTE was a sought after gig. Thought it was designed as a way to throw Geist a bone for caddying for Mika and Joe.
I find Howie Kurtz’s column on MSNBC fascinating. Particularly this line “But has the channel developed a culture in which harsh personal attacks are encouraged, or at least tolerated?”

Not defending MSNBC in the least – I don’t watch any of that stuff, but it doesn’t take a big man to take on a competitor, calling out a colleague on-air would have more impact.

I don’t know – maybe he will rail at MSNBC hoping to reform Fox News by crushing it in irony.

I had a feeling Shactman was going to be a temporary replacement for Willie. Way Too Early is definitely the show for Roberts… he’s a really fun and energetic guy, which is what you need for the mornings. However, it does feel like a bit of a demotion going from having your first hour-long show right before noon eastern, to a half-hour show before 6 in the morning. But at least he gets to make appearances on MJ, too.

Oops… I meant having your own, not first.
