CNN Kills International News Hour…Demotes Suzanne Malveaux

I knew this was coming sooner or later. CNN ended its flirtation with International news by ending the Michael Holmes/Suzanne Malveaux CNNI simulcast and will be putting Legal View with Ashleigh Banfield on instead. John Berman and Michaela Pereira will take over at 11am. Some are going to wonder if this is the first step in moving Pereira off of the floundering New Day. I am one of those people.

John Berman and Michaela Pereira To Co-Anchor CNN’s 11 a.m. Hour
CNN today announced changes to its weekday programming lineup. Starting Monday, February 10, 2014, John Berman and Michaela Pereira will co-anchor CNN’s 11 a.m. (ET) hour of dayside programming.  Berman and Pereira will continue to anchor “Early Start” and “New Day,” respectively.  Pereira joined the network last year with the launch of “New Day,” while Berman joined in 2012, and has covered several national news stories including the Boston Marathon Bombing and the deadly tornadoes in Oklahoma.

“Legal View with Ashleigh Banfield,” which examines national news through a legal lens, will move from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. (ET) for the hour.

CNN’s award-winning lead political anchor Wolf Blitzer will continue to anchor the 1 p.m. (ET) hour, “Wolf,” with a focus on politics, breaking news and international news.  He will also continue to anchor “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer” weekdays from 5 – 6:30 p.m. (ET). Carol Costello will continue to anchor 9 – 11 a.m. (ET) and Brooke Baldwin will continue to anchor 2 – 4 p.m. (ET).

Award-winning anchor and correspondent Suzanne Malveaux will return to her journalism roots as CNN’s national correspondent covering politics, national news, and international current events. For more than 10 years, she covered the White House, including Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, and as well as their travels across Europe, Africa, The Balkans, Latin America, Southeast Asia, Australia and the Middle East.  Malveaux’s return to Washington, D.C., allows her to better care for her mother, who suffers from ALS.  Malveaux chronicled her mother’s battle against the disease in a series of CNN reports last year (‘My Mother’s Journey with ALS’).

Michael Holmes will return full-time to CNN International and continue to anchor “International Desk,” which airs weekdays at 10 a.m. (ET).  Holmes has spent much of his award-winning career covering the world’s hotspots, and is currently on assignment in Baghdad, Iraq, where he has covered the war from the very beginning.

Beginning Feb. 10, CNN’s weekday anchor schedule will be:

9 – 11 a.m.                  Carol Costello
11 a.m. – 12 p.m.        John Berman and Michaela Pereira
12 – 1 p.m.                  Ashleigh Banfield
1 – 2 p.m.                    Wolf Blitzer
2 – 4 p.m.                    Brooke Baldwin

  1. Remember when John Berman and Michaela Pereira were subbing for Carol a couple months ago?

I had figured then it had to be a test for what could become a permanent anchor pairing.

Suzanne Malveaux already lost the 1pm hour to Wolf so it’s not that surprising she is no longer anchoring.

  2. It will be interesting to see with what name CNN brands the new 11am show. I hope they move away from the CNN Newsroom name; maybe something reminiscent of a late “morning” show. They are a great pairing, and it is good to see Berman in a permanent place later in the day. (I mean, 5am for a guy of his caliber?) and it is equally pleasing to see Michaela being afforded a real chance, a thing she hasn’t really gotten as of yet on New Day.

  3. I believe Suzanne was the last African American journalist working the daytime anchor desk at CNN. Jeff Zucker really seems to be whitening that channel.

  4. I kept on telling Malveaux to stop leaning to the side and sit up straight. Think she would listen? NoooO.

    Fredricka Whitfield does weekend afternoons.

whitfield is just plain awful. how she has hung in there is beyond me!

  7. Yes! That leaning to the side she did was annnnoyyyyyying. But I really like Michael Holmes. This will be better for Suzanne. Sending good thoughts to her Mom.

I never really understood the hate for Fredrika…she’s a pretty good anchor, in my opinion…and her Saturday/Sunday hours are often the highest rated hours of the entire week for CNN, outrating even weekday prime…so she can’t be doing THAT bad….

As for John Berman, it’s about time he got more exposure….a guy like him shouldn’t be hidden at 5 in the morning. Michaela Pereira is also deserving of more air time, since (for whatever stupid reason) CNN doesn’t give her much airtime on New Day. She’s a pretty good anchor (as seen when she subs on Early Start) and hopefully the 11am hour will let her expose more of her outgoing personality, which seems to be stifled on New Day….

  9. I enjoyed watching Around The World. Hate to see it go, but nothing lasts forever in cable news *shrug*. Michael Holmes & Suzanne Malveaux have great chemistry. The rest of CNN is turning into trashy HLN. Sorry to hear about Malveaux’s Mom. God bless her.

And yeah seriously, why does Ashleigh Banfield keep getting TV jobs???

  10. For the Berman/Pereira test to continue for an hour while Costello/Baldwin continue solo anchoring two shifts leads me to believe (hopefully ) that Zucker is allowing them to build rapore before naming them a new New Day replacement team. Cuomo needs to be moved to a night time talking head role, and Bolduan is good but should be on newsroom in some way.

  11. It’s about time they game Michaela Pereira more camera time.

  13. Yes there has been a complete
“black out” at CNN Asleigh Banfield over Suzanne???!!!..So much for hard work and a great track record that will be Suzannes legacy. Who is ruining CNN these days!?

  14. It is further testament to the shortsighted, inept management at CNN that they would keep on the air the ever annoying Carol Costello, and ‘demote’, if you will, pros like Suzanne Malveaux. Not only does Suzanne Malveaux run circles around her competition in terms of lack of on-air mistakes, lack of sing-song inflection in her voice (unlike Ms. Costello’s delivery), but she is arguably the most attractive woman perhaps ever on CNN. This move just confirms why Fox News (which I loathe, by the way) is running circles around CNN and MSNBC in the ratings. Long live Suzanne Malveaux!

  15. I agree completely with Christopher Wilmot. Plus, I can’t imagine why they keep sticking with Carol Costello who, to me, is about the most uninteresting reporter they have

  16. I also agree with Christopher. They made a mistake loosing Suzanne, even having her on part-time. She is a joy! To me, she is the most interesting anchor along with others that have been dumped through the years. We always seemed to be left with ones that are just not! Same goes with me about Rick Sanchez- always interesting, but I do like Wolf ,too.

  17. Where is Kyra Phillips…..why doesn’t she have her own one hour spot??? Suzanne isn’t anchoring anymore and CNN ran off Soledad……it is turning into Caucasian Network News…WOW!!!

  18. CNN/MSNBC or should I say Fox and fakes 2
This network has a new name, as I just stated.
No Black anchors welcomed, AL Sharpton, Look over
both of your shoulders, you could be next. I use to love
CNN/MSNBC, when they come back so will I. Minorities wanted.
