The plight of the Middle Class is emerging as a key theme in the upcoming midterm elections. Our changing economy has squeezed this group more than any other. This trend has already deteriorated economic activity and may prove devastating to the American economy, which has traditionally been fueled by middle income consumers. Veteran business journalist Ali Velshi will give viewers a clear, uncluttered examination of this issue during a one-hour special program, “America’s Middle Class – Rebuilding The Dream,” airing Monday, February 3 at 7 pm ET/4 pm PT and 10 pm ET/7 pm PT on Al Jazeera America.
Velshi will speak with personal finance guru Suze Orman, who will detail how the Middle Class is spending its money; Robert Reich, former US Secretary of Labor and Professor of Public Policy at UC Berkeley will define the elements that make up this economic group; and Robert Shiller, Nobel Laureate and economist will examine whether home ownership remains a viable part of the American dream. Velshi also talks with Middle Class families, who tell their stories and give insight into the issues they face daily.
“America’s Middle Class – Rebuilding The Dream” kicks off a yearlong study of the Middle Class by Velshi and Al Jazeera America. Two town hall-style meetings will be held later this year to continue the conversation with the people of the Middle Class as their struggle comes to the forefront ahead of the midterm elections.
Ali Velshi is host of Al Jazeera America’s “Real Money with Ali Velshi,” a 30-minute business talk show from Al Jazeera America’s New York studio. The show airs Monday-Saturday 7pmET/4pmPT; 2:30amET/11:30pmPT; and 8:30amET/5:30amPT.
