Piers Morgan to Quit CNN Show?

Ok, normally I don’t fall for these “sky is falling” Piers Morgan stories because there have been so many of them that the story has taken on “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” status. However this is The Sunday Times so I have to pay attention. The Times’ Will Pavia has the story, which is unfortunately hidden behind a pay wall that I can’t circumvent they way I could other newspapers’ pay walls…

Three years after he launched himself on an unsuspecting American public as a prime-time interrogator of politicians and celebrities, Piers Morgan has admitted defeat in the nightly ratings battle and plans to step down from his CNN show.

The former tabloid editor, who has transformed himself into a cable news personality, said that dwindling viewing figures and an anti-gun campaign that alienated a vast swath of his audience had led him to conclude that his show had “run its course”.

“It’s been a painful period and lately we have taken a bath in the ratings,” he said. “I am a…

Not much to go on based on this snippet. I would however point out that alienating a vast swath of your audience is pretty damn near a requirement to get anywhere in cable news primetime so I wouldn’t factor that into my decision to leave if I was Morgan. Then again this all could be Morgan positioning his exit as “his decision” rather than Jeff Zucker’s…

Update: The New York Times’ David Carr also writes about it so this is for real…in fact the Sunday Times story is a regurgitation of Carr’s story…

“It’s been a painful period and lately we have taken a bath in the ratings,” he said, adding that although there had been times when the show connected in terms of audience, slow news days were problematic.

“Look, I am a British guy debating American cultural issues, including guns, which has been very polarizing, and there is no doubt that there are many in the audience who are tired of me banging on about it,” he said. “That’s run its course and Jeff and I have been talking for some time about different ways of using me.”

Mr. Morgan said that his show, along with much of the rest of CNN, had been imprisoned by the news cycle and that he was interested in doing fewer appearances to greater effect — big, major interviews that would be events in themselves. Although a change has long been rumored, it was the first time that both he, and the CNN executives I talked to, acknowledged that his nightly show was on the way out. Plans for a replacement at the 9 o’clock hour are still underway, but Mr. Morgan and the network are in talks about him remaining at CNN in a different role.

  1. There are a few good people who could benefit from that timeslot.

  2. Politico just tweeted Zucker canceled it.

  3. Who’s looking forward to a continuous loop of old LockUp documentaries, I mean Forensic Files.

  4. Larry King must be rolling in his grave………..

  5. I would say bring back Larry King , but I don’t think he would want to what ever CNN is now

  6. The only reason Piers was lucky enough to even get the ratings he had was that he brought on conservative debaters to tangle with and with them came their conservative viewers.

  7. I’m sure this was all his own decision based partially by the opportunity to spend more time with the family.

  8. I continue to believe that CNN made the right call dumping King. King doesn’t know when to quit and call it a day. Yes he was the highest rated show on CNN at the time but that’s damning with faint praise…

NBC and it’s affiliates are giving the English accent a bad name by having these vile liberal progressives on the air.

Send these jerks back to annoy the queen.

    And it’s NOT ALUMINIUM.

    Brits can’t shake a mistake

Possibly why they still insist on being ‘subjects’ and taxed to fund a monarchy that sucks away their wealth and most basic individual rights.

SAY IT: ALUMINUM – Merriam-Webster Online

So now there is an effort to change the spelling so as not to embarrass the Brits:

    London Metal Exchange: Aluminium

    OMG! Toooo funny!

Google it (what a riot the Brits are):

Kitco – Aluminum Charts and Graphs – Aluminum Prices …

It’s Elemental – The Element Aluminum

  10. Two possible replacement programs: ‘New Night’ with Chris Cuomo and ‘Talking Food’ with Anthony Bourdain. 🙂

  11. jay leno at the upfronts

  12. How long till CNN cans Erin Burnett? Anybody know how long her contract runs?

  13. It’s one thing to alienate a significant part of your potential audience; it’s quite another not to cultivate a significant part of your potential audience.

He seemed to enjoy doing the first while forgetting to do the other. Who was he appealing to?

The old “elite vs. the people” explanation is, I know, old and cliched. But it did seem that he was more interested in garnering “elite” opinion then “mass” opinion.

And he never seemed to want to learn about Americans. He wanted to lecture Americans, to scold Americans, to hector Americans. But understand them? I never go a sense that he wanted to much less tried.

  14. This Zucker made his first mistake with the cancellation of Sole dad Obrien’s morning show. The networks hire theses old guys with the Good old boy’s mind set, when they should be hiring the new guys on the block, i.e. younger generation. To meet the multicultural masses. Zucker spent millions on New Day, fired as many minorities from the network as possible. On these morning shows we should have a multicultural panel, ie. white , asian, hispanic, black, and so on. Mr. Zucker do to your 1940’s southern mentality , please do us justice and resign. Your method is not working.
