The Hazards of Live TV: #25,135

Uh…not good.

Fox News anchor Shepard Smith apologized Monday afternoon, after a Fox News producer reported witnessing police in Baltimore chasing a man–who may have been unarmed–and then seeming to shoot him. Fox News correspondent Mike Tobin also described witnessing a handgun on the ground and hearing a gunshot at the scene. But there was no shooting. “Sounds like what happened is we screwed up,” said Smith.

Update: Johnny Dollar has video of one of the “eyewitness” reports…

  1. gatxer Says:

I saw some lady on CNN say they chased a boy down the street and shot a black boy in the face….now there was gunfire….so im giving Fox and RT News a break.

There was a shot and a handgun on the ground……so Shepard got that wrong in his correction.

  2. The real question for me was Mike Tobin’s eyewitness inferences reasonable?

I think they were, while others may disagree.

Another issue is, given the current racial tensions in Baltimore, should Mr. Tobin have sought confirmation from the police before going live with such an inflammatory charge as to suggest a cop had just shot a fleeing black man in the back?

For me, that’s a tough call for an eyewitness and I will leave that up to the J-school professors.
