Tamron Hall Exits (MS)NBC

CNN’s Brian Stelter writes about Tamron Hall’s abrupt departure…something everyone would have found impossible to contemplate a month ago.

Tamron Hall, a regular host on NBC’s “Today” show and MSNBC, is leaving the network later this month.

Her departure was announced on Wednesday after days of contentious contract negotiations.

Hall had been the co-host of the 9 a.m. hour of the “Today” show and a daytime anchor on MSNBC. Last week executives informed Hall and the “Today” staff that the 9 a.m. hour was being canceled to make room for a new program led by former Fox News host Megyn Kelly.

Hall won’t have a chance to say goodbye on the air. “Yesterday was her last day as an anchor on both networks,” NBC said in a statement. “Tamron is an exceptional journalist, we valued and enjoyed her work at ‘Today’ and MSNBC and hoped that she would decide to stay. We are disappointed that she has chosen to leave, but we wish her all the best.”

Too bad this happened today and not last week. Then Hall might have immediately wound up over at CNN’s dayside operation (provided no non-compete was at play). But with CNN’s roster now set for the moment, Hall would be frozen out. Of course Jeff Zucker could just as easily blow that up to make room for Hall if he wanted her bad enough.

I really don’t see where Hall would land at this point. GMA has too many people. Gayle King just signed a big extension for CBS This Morning. What’s left?

  1. We pretty much know why Greta left so abruptly — also without an on-air goodbye.

Basically she and her representative tried a bit of a power play during negotiations of her new contract — which apparently angered Rupert. The next thing you know FNC ‘enforcers’ are at her doorstep telling her to clean out her office.

So far I’m not clear why Tamron left so suddenly — especially if her MSNBC job was still in the mix.

Oh well. Hope she bounces back somewhere…unlike Andrea Tantaros who seems to have fallen under a heavy object and can’t get up (an homage to “When Harry Met Sally.”)

  2. With a little help from Yahoo I did just learn that the abrupt departure was her idea.

“Hall declined a new multiyear contract and decided to leave the network and MSNBC altogether.”

Did she let anger get the best of her with a shortsighted refusal to keep the MSNBC gig? Who knows.

  3. What about Fox News Channel? They have an opening at Gretchen’s old hour still correct? I haven’t seen anything that they named a permanent anchor in that slot yet.

  4. Would FNC take her? She doesn’t really seem to fill any holes or weaknesses there.

  5. Personally I don’t care where TH ends up; although Drew’s suggestion she replace GV-S at FNC is pretty much a non starter for obvious reasons.

Chris Jansing is doing her time slot today so that’s a positive. The other thing I noticed was her MSNBC.com profile and show listing are still up so her departure must have been a surprise to the network.

The other thing I’m wondering about is what happens to Al Roker? If he decides it’s time to go as well then NBC will have pushed out two black stars and replaced them with someone who thinks Santa Claus is white.

  6. I’m very sad to see TH gone 😦
