Bye, Bye Bob… (Again)

FNC fired Bob Beckel today. Variety’s Brian Steinberg has why

Fox News Channel is parting ways — again — with Bob Beckel, the co-host of its primetime program, “The Five.”

“Bob Beckel was terminated today for making an insensitive remark to an African-American employee,” the network said in a statement.

The dismissal opens — or perhaps closes — another chapter in an off-and-on relationship Beckel has had with the 21st Century Fox-owned cable-news outlet over the years. Beckel, a longtime political consultant as well as a former campaign manager for Democratic presidential candidate Walter Mondale, joined Fox News in 2000, and had a years-long tenure on “The Five” when it aired in the late afternoon. Indeed, he was one of the program’s original co-hosts.

  1. Call me jaded, but I feel like many people didn’t want to see Bob come back and they were just waiting for an excuse – any excuse – to get rid of him again.

  2. That Beckel was fired isn’t surprising- no matter the excuse. The two questions that are of more interest are where does he go from here and who’s his replacement?

Where he goes from here seems obvious – CNN. He’s a perfect fit as a panelist on Don Lemons’s show where he can but heads with Jeffery Lord, Kayleigh McEnany and the other Trump pundits.

His replacement is harder to guess. The linked story suggests Juan Williams but he seems a bit of a milquetoast as a replacement for Beckel. I just can’t think of any liberal who would be a good fit, willing to work at the network and who would fit in with Fox New’s values and ethics except Anthony Weiner – but sadly for FNC – he’s off to jail soon.

  3. Beckel already was at CNN in between Fox stints.

Juan is already the other guy to occupy the liberal chair on The Five. Presumably he’ll be on more but they may need a second person to fill the liberal role so Juan doesn’t have to be on all the time.

  4. Kinda liked the lovable old bear, but this is the THIRD strike in my mind.

He has also been called out for insensitive remarks about the Chinese and also Muslims.

Once a Staten Island boy (for college), always a Staten Island boy? Is that the message here? 🙂

  5. Sounds like it could be justified…but no doubt some will compare this to Jesse Watters not being punished for mocking interviews of Asian-Americans.

False equivalency? You be the judge.

    Bottom line:
A steady diet of Juan Williams and possibly Ailes apologist Geraldo Rivera can’t be good news for a primetime version of The Five struggling with ratings.

When I saw Beckel on CNN during the election, then back on Fox afterwards, I thought I was going crazy. It was totally out of the blue.

Either way, the guy sounds like a bit of a weirdo. He can’t seem to act normal on a consistent basis. One second, he’s kind of a liberal, then he goes on some insane rant about putting a bullet in someone’s head (or something along those lines).

He’s just mentally unbalanced, I guess.
