Human Shields or Not?

The Cutline’s Joe Pompeo writes about whether or not reporters from CNN and Reuters were used as human shields in Libya last night…

Nigel Pritchard, a spokesman for CNN, confirmed that CNN correspondent Nic Robertson and his crew were present on the tour. The event lasted about 30 minutes Sunday evening, and also included journalists from Reuters, CBS, NPR, AP, The Los Angeles Times, The Times of London, and various Russian, German and Arab news organizations, Pritchard said. Robertson filed the report below:

It’s unclear whether the Libyan government’s intent was actually to use the journalists as “human shields,” or if they were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Pritchard said CNN “only became aware of the British military decision today”—and that Robertson had no indication he may have been in harm’s way while reporting.

What the journalists did, by going with the Libyans, is equivalent to hunkering down with Saddam at the outset of the Iraq War. It is stupid because you run a higher risk of getting killed. They should have stayed in the hotel.
