CNN Announces Show Names for New Lineup…Viewing Public Perplexed…

TVNewser noted CNN has announced show names for its new morning programming. The 7am show will be called “Starting Point” and the 5am show will be called “Early Start”…

I know it’s tough throwing together two new programs relatively quickly but could CNN at least come up with a naming convention that at least makes sense? How can you possibly have a show called “Starting Point” come after another show? The whole point of a “Starting Point” is that there is no before. It’s the beginning.

The only thing that could possibly be worse than having a show called “Starting Point” that comes after another show is having a show that’s called “Early Start” before a show called “Starting Point”. Doing so implies that you can skip “Starting Point” precisely because “Early Start” does get the jump on what comes next.

Why do programmers have to overthink these things so? You can name a show without making it confusing (“Fareed Zakaria GPS”) or silly (“John King, USA”). Not that CNN is the only one to do this…all the networks think too hard over these things (“The Pulse” and “Rock Center”, anyone?). It’s not rocket science. Stop making it look like it needs to be. “The Situation Room” was an elegant solution that perfectly described the show’s format..at least until CNN streamlined the format which made the name not quite as applicable as it was in the beginning. So I know the networks can avoid the silly and nonsensical show names if they try to. They just don’t try hard enough often enough.

  1. why not just leave it american morning? does a name really matter? just give us the news and be done with it.

  2. Or you can catch the new 4 AM “Jump the Gun” show surprisingly hosted a clown and hand puppet.

  3. Midnight’s “CNN IS FINISHED” pilot with Kathy Griffin will be on New Year’s Eve, but did not make it to the season schedule.

  4. Cheetah the Chimp’s death was faked and now we have CNN trying to fool us with repackaged shows and names that make no sense.

It’s enough to make a man cynical.

  5. When you do 100-mile charity bicycle rides, they have a Starting Point window of say, 6-8am. Many riders like to get an Early Start to the Starting Point so they’re good to go right at 6, and won’t be out there all day.

Someone at CNN does charity rides, and is way too clever for his/her own good.

  6. Harry, the point is letting people know its a new program with new host(s).

The names are asinine. Is Jautz slipping? Or does he not have as much power at CNN that he did at HLN? For some reason I think CNN gets micromanaged from the top but have no proof.

That said, I’m willing to bet its more of the same failed CNN formula (complete with canned pieces which don’t work in the morning) and choosing these ‘tarded names is par for the course.

  7. Sighs, this is really stupid.

    Here’s what they should do:

Daybreak with Carol Costello, bring it back, she’s been good on AM, and CNN shouldn’t invest much in basically a “early Today style show”

Banfield and the new hire should be used during the daytime hours as Suzanne Mal is a not a great anchor. Banfield should be blitzer’s lead in, as she has more name recondition. Having her on at 5AM is waste of resources for a network with no names.

American Morning should’ve stayed just as name but with new solo anchor format, and morning joes like branding culture. American morning was never bad until the Klein era with anchors Roberts and Krian. That show era up until now has become so watered down it looks like an HLN product.

The time when they had the MSG street side studio and then used AJ Hammer’s set was the best periods for the show. An anchor who was in the time slot before is returning, the show is not that much of a departure, so why loose a name? Especially one marketing and pr people would love to play with. There’s so many things you could do with that brand.

You can use Soladad’s IN American connection and restart AM as a brand that’s “for the people”

  8. First Look, Early Today, Early Start, Starting Point. Morning news Muzak titles.

  9. Costello, eh? Who can forget that little tiff she got into with Chad Myers! I’m sure its still on youtube.

Oh, and as if Klien’s ‘brilliant idea’ of O’brien&Obrien worked so well.. IIRC, they averaged about 150K in the demo.

  10. I have an idea. CNN should just give up and air a test pattern in the morning.

  11. “Test Pattern, with Ali Velshi”.
Or Fareed..one of those foreign guys.

  12. Cheetah is not dead? I’m so relieved.

  13. But Keith Olbermann is on life support.

    Well, his career is.

  14. We’ll see how it goes but my impression is that CNN still doesn’t understand the morning audience.

  15. There just isn’t any room for CNN. Fox & Friends has the People Who Always Watch Fox, Morning Joe has the smart people, and HLN has “watch the pretty girl before work”. Everybody else is watching Today, GMA, or cartoons.

  16. I think CNN could one-up FNC with the right approach and earn some viewers from them, but they’ll never do it.

  17. ^ agree, I’m watching nothing at that time now as Fox and Fiends is gawd-awful, and Morning Joe has copied the nightly shows in full time Republican candidate bashing.

  18. This is why people leave CNN , they get passed over for good jobs (JT Holmes is way more suited to anchor weekdays than Suzanne , and Carol Costello would be great for mornings over Solead. I say Early Start will do OK , Starting Point will be changed up

  19. […] morning CNN launched its new morning lineup of two new confusingly named shows. As always in the internet age, the pressure is on to deliver that instant rapid reaction […]
