Update: MSNBC’s release…

“THE LAST WORD WITH LAWRENCE O’DONNELL” PREMIERES MONDAY, SEPT. 27, 10 PM ET

LOS ANGELES – July 30, 2010 – “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell” will premiere Monday, Sept. 27 on MSNBC, 10-11 p.m. ET. MSNBC President Phil Griffin announced the premiere date and title of the program this afternoon at the Television Critics Association session in Los Angeles. “The Last Word” will reach back into O’Donnell’s extraordinary background in politics, entertainment and news, providing the last word on the biggest issues and most compelling stories of the day.

“Lawrence is one of the rare hosts in cable news who has been in the room when policy is created. His background is an amazing asset to our primetime lineup, and I can’t wait for it to debut,” said Griffin.

O’Donnell has been a MSNBC political analyst since the network’s launch in 1996 and has been the regular guest host for “Countdown with Keith Olbermann.” He has also guest hosted for “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” “The Ed Show” and “The Rachel Maddow Show.”

O’Donnell was an Emmy Award-winning executive producer and writer for the NBC series “The West Wing” and was creator and executive producer of the NBC series “Mister Sterling.”

From 1989 through 1992, O’Donnell served as Senior Advisor to Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. In 1992, he was the Chief of Staff to the Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works. From 1993 through 1995 he was the Chief of Staff of the Senate Finance Committee. He first began working with Sen. Moynihan as Director of Communications in the Senator’s 1988 re-election campaign.

A writer prior to entering politics and government, O’Donnell published the book Deadly Force (1983), which was adapted as a CBS movie in 1986. He has written essays and articles for several publications, including The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, New York, People, Spy and Boston Magazine. O’Donnell has also appeared on NBC News’ “Today,” “Good Morning America,” “Nightline,” “Charlie Rose” and several other programs. Suffolk University awarded O’Donnell an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, in 2001.

Izzy Povich is senior executive producer of “The Last Word.” Greg Kordick is executive producer.

    After:

    -The Dylan Ratigan Show

    -The Ed Show

    -The Rachel Maddow Show

I’m glad they went with something more…creative.

They should have gone back to their ‘last name’ trend (Donahue, Nachman) and called it “O’Donnell”. They would have scooped up the “looking for a pretty redhead” demographic..

Like maybe Hannity or Glenn Beck or Special Report Or The Fox Report.
Aside from maybe Morning Joe show names on all the cable news nets are boring and ‘The Last Word’ is as good or bad as any.

  5. joeremi Says:

“Special Report” was genius. It sounds cool and important and “oh crap, I better watch this”. Whoever had the idea that you could put the “breaking news” banner on a daily news program was brilliant.

  6. Outsider Says:

At least it’s not another program based on the name of the host. Can’t stand names like Rick’s List, Hannity, Rachel Maddow. Too much emphasis on the personality rather than the day’s ‘news’. It’s still bad though.

  7. I like it. It also works well in the sense that it’s the last live show of the night, so he basically does have “the last word“. Good job, MSNBC.

I was hoping they wouldn’t go with just his name for the show. That’s way too predictable. However, I like “The Ed Show” because Schultz wants to play off as that regular middle-class guy and just be called “Ed“.

I also liked Dylan Ratigan’s show called “Morning Meeting“. I thought that was very creative, because it was just that… a morning meeting with a bunch of people around a table having a discussion about the news of the day. But, as we all know, that show didn’t work out because, I guess, viewers weren’t watching an opinion show at 9am.

  8. “Schultz wants to play off as that regular middle-class guy and just be called “Ed“.”
I think it’s an unfortunate name. I always think of “Mr. Ed” whenever I hear it.

Prop bet: How many shows before actual steam comes out of the ears of Crazy Larry? Ok, it will depend if he goes Olby style and only invites on the same 4 far-left guests everytime. BUT, if he has conservatives on, I say he has a meltdown by show # 3. Another great bet would be to watch MSNBC’s primetime lineup for a week (oh, the agony) and see who uses some form of “racist” the most. Or, you could turn it in to a drinking game and be hammered halfway through Tingles’ show.

  10. joeremi Says:

Yeah, LS, that stuff never happens to anybody on Fox. Only libs get upset.

Let’s just remember, the Word is… the Word.

    Grease is The Word.

Anybody remember when O’Reilly called Neal Boortz a ‘vicious son of a b!tch’?

  13. joeremi Says:

    Anybody remember when O’Reilly…

But that’s different. Conservative batshyte crazy rage is justified..

  14. laura l Says:

Those were the days when you waited for BO to take a swing at somebody. The therapy is going well..

  15. joeremi Says:

    We’ll do it live!

Find the remix on YouTube. It’s worth it.

    Joe:
Are you really going to compare the level of sanity between the primetime hosts at MSNBC & Fox? Lets see:

    Shep vs. Tingles
    O’Reilly vs. Bathtub Boy
Hannity vs. Maddow (both fairly even keel)
    Greta vs. Larry

  18. joeremi Says:

    LS:
Are you really going to pretend this is a conversation, and not just another round of Lonestar Spouts Off? I’d love to stay and watch the show, but those groceries aren’t gonna buy themselves. Tootles.

  19. lonestar77 Says:

“Lonestar Spouts Off”…sounds like a great title for a show! I may even let you be on my panel from time to time. I pay with beer, though. Sorry, no Heineken.

  20. joeremi Says:

    Mmmm, beer..
