The Hazards of Live TV: #25,180

I wouldn’t categorize this Hazard as a joke like TVNewser did. I would call it a slip up. And pfft on MSNBC for editing it out for a re-air.

  1. Come on. No-one calls Lindsey Graham a girl by accident. It’s a disgusting vein of sexism and homophobia that seems equally common on the left and right.

  2. I would agree with you spud, but they always edit the 8 am reair, taking out fluff stuff for time.

  3. It was a slip until MJ edited the tape. Now it’s a problem for MSNBC. If they say and do nothing why did they edit the tape. If they suspend Heilemann or he apologizes then it makes the slip a much bigger story.

This is a much worse problem than the Halperin ‘d*ick’ one was for MJ, MSNBC and the media press in general. With Halperin it was easy to sweep it away because, although it was disrespectful, it wasn’t racist or homophobic.

This comment can be seen, by some, as homophobic and therefore takes on a whole new life. I expect this to become a cause celebre within the next 24 hours. I now expect to see a very carefully worded apology and suspension by Heilemann.

The other question that may, and should, get some attention is why was Lindsey Graham, and not John McCain, assumed to be the target of the joke? Graham’s name was not mentioned by Heilemann but every press mention of the joke (except for Spud – who obviously read my earlier comment on this topic) 😉 has assumed the target was Graham. Maybe some apologies from the press are in order as well.

  4. Sophomoric jokes are no longer acceptable under the regime. Get with it.

  5. Soph0moric jokes are no longer acceptable under the regime. Get with it.

What’s funny is that “soph0moric” gets moderated.

  6. More homophobic than sophomoric. Heilemann and JS should be suspended like their amigo Mark Halperin was over a year ago. Heilemann for saying what he said and JS for laughing like a high school idiot.

  7. Outrageous. Spud should be ashamed of himself for pooh-poohing this! How many little boys or teens are tormented by wise guys making fun of their feminine traits. That goes for the parents who must steer their boys through the trauma of “jokes” by the like of Heilman. Maybe if the target is the enemy it’s okay, but that’s aways the way with bullies.

  8. savefarris Says:

Just remember: it’s okay to use ‘that moderated word‘ as a slur against someone you disagree with … as long as they’re a Republican.

  9. Larry, I loved your comment on Politico (unless it was a different Larry Kelly).

  10. That was me. I get around. If nothing else, to irritate Fritz.

  11. i posted this comment this morning but it got moderated

  12. Why does sophomoric get moderated? Or homophobic for that matter?

  13. Fritz, the deal is that Graham being a bachelor had opened himself up to speculation to the point he was asked in an interview if he were g@y. He denied being so in a good natured way. The press were not taking any far leaps on this. No question to whom the “joke” was directed. Tip of my hat to you for being a liberal critic on this and not brushing it off.

^^I know everyone thinks he was talking about Graham but it’s still bad reporting. By putting his name out there; and both right and left and center went with Graham’s name; they do a disservice to fair and balanced reporting. And who knows he could have been talking about John McCain. He’s been sounding more and more like a bitter old women of late. 😉

  15. Oh, that sounds so desperate, but Fritz’s joke is funny (well, as funny as Fritz can be) because it’s about McCain. Heilman’s joke was a hate-joke because it was about the Graham rumors of his being ginger. Nobody that’s being serious beleives MSNBC censored it because it it was about McCain.
