CNN changes

CNN announced some changes to its schedule, including a half hour (!!!) Crossfire, a new AC 360 panel analysis format at 10pm and an extra hour of Wolf Blitzer at 1pm ET. Obvious question: are Suzanne Malveaux’s days numbered? It’s her hour that Blitzer is taking over…

CNN to debut Crossfire, AC 360° Later on Monday, Sept. 16

Wolf Blitzer Adds Anchoring 1 p.m. Hour of CNN’s Newsroom to his Situation  Room Role

CNN today announced that Crossfire, hosted by Newt Gingrich, Stephanie Cutter, S.E. Cupp and Van Jones, will debut Monday, Sept. 16 at 6:30 p.m. ET. Also, AC 360° Later, a new prime time program, will air Monday through Thursday at 10 p.m. ET.

Crossfire, the classic debate program, will resemble the show’s original format withpassionate conversation and focus on topical events of the day. The daily, 30-minute program will feature two hosts and guests each night, discussing a range of issues from all sides of the political and cultural spectrum. In addition to the weekday show, the Crossfire co-hosts will appear across the network’s programming.

The centerpiece of AC 360° Later will be a provocative and informed panel conversation, focusing on the day’s news and events. The program will be hosted by Anderson Cooper and will feature a range of opinions and points-of-view from guests and newsmakers. The show will also include CNN correspondents, analysts and commentators plus a special guest each night.

In addition to anchoring The Situation Room from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Wolf Blitzer will add the 1 p.m. hour of Newsroom to his anchor responsibilities beginning Monday, Sept. 16.

Crossfire, which aired weeknights from 1982 to 2005, examined political and social issues in a televised debate. Conservative Pat Buchanan and liberal Tom Braden were the original hosts of the program, but over the years Crossfire featuredvarious hosts from the right and from the left, including Robert Novak, Tucker Carlson, James Carville and Paul Begala. Guests on the program were frequently top lawmakers from across the political spectrum, but also included an eclectic mix of other personalities: Bob Hope, Rupert Murdoch, Charlton Heston, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Dr. Jack Kevorkian, Rush Limbaugh, Christopher Reeves, Arianna Huffington and Howard Cosell. As the preeminent political talk program, Crossfire cemented its status in the political and cultural lexicon when President Bill Clinton joked during hisremarks at the 1997 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner that the newly opened Newseum featured an exhibit with “CNN’s very first Crossfire– from the left, Alexander Hamilton, from the right, Aaron Burr, topic, gun control.”

  1. Jeff Zucker began his CNN presidency on the new year. By two years in January 2015, everything might not have worked out to his expectations so I think it would be best for CNN US to be replaced by CNN International. All the popular domestic anchors will stay put though like Wolf Blitzer, Anderson Cooper, and Chris Cuomo. The Situation Room and AC360º are simulcasted on both networks anyway, not to mention major breaking news, political events such as elections and debates. All are simulcasted. I strongly feel that Americans crave more international news anyway. I don’t see too much of it on CNN US.

  2. To me the most interesting change is the ‘new’ AC show. Panels are all over the place in cable news and if they have interesting members they can be quite entertaining. The key is to have a good moderator; which I think Anderson is; and to not have a bunch of partisan hacks spouting talking points. Up with Steve Kornacki is an example of how the format can work well. MHP shows how you can do it badly.

I’ll wait to see how Crossfire turns out as I have no idea if it will work or not. Being up against Sharpton gives it a head start. As for Blitzer I see a slow moving of him out to pasture.

Malveaux is a very good reporter and I don’t see her moving back to that job as a bad thing.

  3. Bring back Inside Politics at 6 and I’ll switch to CNN. Switching from an MSNBC show at the half-hour mark to catch Crossfire seems unlikely, and there’s no chance I’m watching Wolf at 6.

  4. Suzanne still co-anchors Around the World with Michael Holmes during the noon hour, as far as I know.

  5. ^dang, just whe I was getting my hopes up.

  6. AC with tonight’s panel:
    … Roland Martin
    … Jack Cafferty
    … Soledad O’Brian
    … Rick Sanchez

    That’d be awesome!

CNN Rebranding 11 AM Hour As ‘Legal View with Ashleigh Banfield’

CNN is rebranding the 11 AM hour of “CNN Newsroom” as “Legal View with Ashleigh Banfield” starting Monday, August 12, TVNewser has learned. Banfield has been anchoring the 11 AM hour for over a year, but the new branding will let her put her own stamp on things. The logline for the hour will be “Ashleigh Banfield tackles the day’s most compelling legal stories.” The move is consistent with other changes CNN has made.

  8. There was a time when Ashleigh Banfield was the most badass, most fearless Honey Badger reporter on television. It’s a shame she spends her days covering circus trials now.

  9. Outsider Says:

With names like AC 360° Later, CNN should come up with the slogan ‘CNN=programs with terrible names’.

  10. capricex Says:

@andy they need to move her hour to 7PM and replace Burnett or move her to 5/6PM. I think she sticks with Legal now because its safe for her and the network uses her in that capacity.

Suzanne would be a greater asset as a reporter than anchor, and the network needs someone like her out in the field.

  11. preferably the north forty

  12. The 1:00PM hour should be titled “Happening Now with Wolf Blitzer” OR “Wolf Blitzer Reports”, just like his previous program before The Situation Room.

  13. CNN should hire Arthur Kent as a co-host for Wolf Blitzer.

Scud Stud & Blitzer…This Is CNN

  14. I hear Bernie Shaw is available.

  15. icemannyr Says:

Any update on Ashleigh Banfield doing her show from an actual studio?
She’s gone from using the NYC Newsroom to a having just a giant LCD screen with a camera showing NYC behind her.

  16. CNN should bring back NewsNight but I don’t Aaron Brown would be up for that
