NEW YORK – January 4, 2013 – MSNBC had the most-watched quarter in network history, reaching an all-time high in P2+ for the Total Day time period (M-Su 6a-6a) and Daytime (M-F 9a-5p) during the fourth quarter of 2012, according to data from The Nielsen Company. MSNBC also hit all-time highs in total viewers with “Morning Joe,” “Hardball,” “PoliticsNation” and “The Last Word.”

In Total Day (M-Su 6a-6a), MSNBC had the best total viewer delivery ever and the best A25-54 quarterly delivery since 4Q08. MSNBC ranked #2 in total viewers (623,000 vs. 524,000) and A25-54 (217,000 vs 184,000), up 49% in total viewers and 62% in A25-54 compared to 4Q11, more growth than any other cable news channel in the time period. MSNBC also ranked #1 with African Americans (P2+ and A25-54) in for the quarter.

In Weekday Prime (M-F 8-11p), MSNBC had the best quarterly delivery in A25-54 and total viewers since 4Q08. MSNBC ranked #2 in A25-54 (471,000 vs. CNN’s 370,000) and total viewers (1.45 million vs. CNN’s 1.01 million). MSNBC Weekday Primetime is up 129% with A25-54 compared to 4Q11, more growth than all cable news channels in the time period combined. MSNBC is also up 72% over 4Q11 in total viewers, more growth than any other cable news out in the time period.

In Sales Prime (M-Su 7p-2a), MSNBC had the best quarterly delivery in A25-54 and total viewers since 4Q08, ranking #2 in both total viewers (898,000 vs. 709,000) and A25-54 (327,000 vs. 263,000). Compared to 4Q11, MSNBC is up 78% in A25-54, more growth in the time period than any other cable news channel and up 56% in total viewers.

Below are 4Q12 morning and primetime highlights for MSNBC:

“First Look” (5-5:30 a.m.) ranked #2 in both total viewers (253,000 vs.201,000) and A25-54 (109,000 vs. 92,000) and ranked #1 among A18-34 for the quarter. “Way Too Early” at 5:30 a.m. ranked #2 for the ninth consecutive quarter in A25-54 (122,000 vs. 98,000) and total viewers (295,000 vs. 208,000). “Way Too Early” was #1 in the younger demo of A18-34. Compared to 4Q11, “WTE” was up 44% in total viewers and 95% in 18-34, more growth than any other cable news program in the period.
“Morning Joe” (6-9 a.m.) had the best quarterly total viewer delivery ever and the best quarter among A25-54 since 4Q08. “Morning Joe” ranked #2 in A25-54 for the 7th consecutive quarter topping CNN by 76% (211,000 vs. 120,000). This is the 12th straight quarter “Morning Joe” has ranked #2 in total viewers with 566,000. “Morning Joe” also ranked #1 among A18-34 for the quarter, up 132% compared to 4Q11, more growth than all other cable news programs in the time period combined. Compared to 4Q11, “Morning Joe” is up 44% in A25-54 and 34% in total viewers, posting more growth than any other cable news program in the time period.
“Hardball with Chris Matthews” at 5 p.m. had the best quarterly time period delivery in network history ranking #2 in total viewers (1.16 million vs. 709,000) and A25-54 (285,000 vs. 203,000). “Hardball” had more growth than the other cable news nets, up 85% in A25-54 and 53% in total viewers compared to 4Q11.
“PoliticsNation” with Rev. Al Sharpton at 6 p.m. had the best quarterly total viewer delivery in network history ranking #2 in P2+ (1.03 million vs. 661,000) and the best A25-54 quarterly delivery since 4Q01 ranking #2 (289,000 vs. 214,000). “PoliticsNation” had more growth than the cable news competition, up 84% in A25-54 and 43% in total viewers compared to 4th quarter of 2011. This is the first time total viewers has topped 1 million viewers at 6 p.m.
At 7 p.m., “Hardball” had the best quarterly delivery since 4Q08, ranking #2 in total viewers (1.06 million vs. 603,000) and A25-54 (316,000 vs. 195,000). “Hardball” had more growth then the cable news competition at 7 p.m., up 71% in A25-54 and 33% in total viewers vs. 4Q11.
“The Ed Show” had the show’s best A25-54 quarterly delivery at 8 p.m. and the best total viewer and demo delivery in the hour since 4Q08. “The Ed Show” ranked #2 for the quarter, topping CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360” in A25-54 (353,000 vs. 228,000) and total viewers (1.27 million vs. 709,000). Compared to 4Q11, “The Ed Show” is up 95% in A25-54 and 43% in total viewers , posting more cable news growth in the hour than any other cable news program.
“The Rachel Maddow Show” at 9 p.m. had the program’s best A25-54 and P2+ delivery since 4Q08. “Maddow” ranked #2 for the quarter with a 120% lead among A25-54 over CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight” (458,000 vs. 208,000) and a 101% advantage over “Piers” in total viewers (1.44 million vs. 715,000) for the quarter. This is the 13th consecutive quarter “Maddow” has topped CNN in both total viewers and A25-54. Among the younger demo of A18-34, “Maddow” ranked #1 for the 4th straight quarter with 92,000, up 92% compared to 4Q11. “Maddow” is up 95% in A25-54 vs. 4Q11, more growth than all cable news programs in the hour combined.
“The Last Word” with Lawrence O’Donnell at 10 p.m. had the best quarterly total viewer delivery in the hour ever and the best A25-54 time period delivery since 4Q08. “The Last Word” ranked #2 in A25-54 (385,000 vs. 216,000 ) and total viewers (1.25 million vs. 604,000). “The Last Word” is up 88% in A25-54 and 50% in total viewers over 4Q11, posting more growth than all cable news programs in the hour combined.

MSNBC Daytime (M-F 9a-5p) had the best quarterly total viewer delivery ever and the best A25-54 quarter performance since 4Q08. Daytime ranked #2 in total viewers for the second consecutive quarter with a 7% advantage over CNN (580,000 vs. 544,000). Compared to 4Q11, MSNBC Daytime is up 87% in A25-54, more growth than all other cable news outlets in the time period combined.

“The Daily Rundown” with Chuck Todd at 9 p.m. had the best A25-54 quarterly delivery ever for the program and the best quarterly delivery in the hour since 4Q08. “The Daily Rundown” ranked #2 in total viewers (601,000 vs. 448,000) and A25-54 (176,000 vs. 153,000) for the quarter and ranked #1 among the younger demo of A18-34. “The Daily Rundown” is up 64% in A25-54 and 44% in total viewers over 4Q11, more growth than all cable news programs in the hour combined and up 142% in A18-34 over 4Q11, more growth than all cable news programs in the hour combined.
At 10 a.m., “Jansing and Company” had the best A25-54 quarterly delivery ever for the program and the best in the hour since 4Q08. This is also the best total viewer delivery in more than ten years – since 4Q01. “Jansing” was #2 in total viewers (494,000 vs. 492,000) and grew 77% in A25-54, 45% with total viewers, and +135% with A18-34 over 4Q11, more growth than all cable news programs in the hour combined.
“MSNBC Live” with Thomas Roberts at 11 a.m. had the best A2554 quarterly delivery since 4Q08 and best total viewer delivery in more than ten years – since 4Q01. Compared to 4Q11, “MSNBC Live” was up 86% with A2554 and 177% with A1834, more growth than all cable news programs in the hour combined. “MSNBC Live” was up 55% in total viewers above 4Q11, more growth than any other cable news program in the hour.
“NOW with Alex Wagner” at noon had the best A2554 quarterly delivery ever for the program and best quarterly delivery in the hour since 1Q03. This was also MSNBC’s best total viewer delivery since 4Q01. “NOW” ranked #2 in A2254 (177,000 vs. 167,000) and total viewers (566,000 vs. 543,000) for the quarter and ranked #1 with A18-34 for the second straight quarter. “NOW” is up 124% in A2554 and 83% with total viewers over 4Q11, more growth than all cable news programs in the hour combined and up 213% in A1834 over 4Q11, posting more growth than all other cable news programs in the hour combined.
At 1 p.m., “Andrea Mitchell Reports” had the program’s best A2554 quarterly delivery ever and best 1p program delivery since 4Q08. This was also MSNBC best total viewer delivery since 4Q01. “Andrea Mitchell Reports” was up 84% in A2554, 65% among total viewers and 169% in A1834 over 4Q11, more growth than all cable news programs in the hour combined.
“NewsNation” with Tamron Hall at 2 p.m. had the program’s best A25-54 quarterly delivery ever and the best A25-54 delivery in the hour since 1Q03. This was also MSNBC’s best total viewer delivery ever in the hour. “NewsNation” ranked #2 in A25-54 (166,000 vs. 163,000) and total viewers (595,000 vs. 553,000). Compared to 4Q11, “NewsNation” is up 87% in A2554, 66% in total viewers and 144% among A18-34, more growth than all cable news programs in the hour combined.
At 3 p.m., “The Cycle” had the program’s best A25-54 quarterly delivery ever and best A25-54 delivery since 1Q03. This was MSNBC’s best total viewer quarterly delivery in the hour ever. “The Cycle” ranked #2 in A25-54 (174,000 vs. 165,000) and total viewers (600,000 vs. 570,000). Compared to 4Q11, “The Cycle” is up 89% in A2554, 55% in Total Viewers and 114% among A1834, more growth than all other cable news programs in the hour combined
“Martin Bashir” at 4 p.m. had the program’s best A25-54 quarterly delivery ever and the best A25-54 quarterly performance since 1Q03. This was also MSNBC’s best quarterly delivery in total viewers in the hour ever. “Martin Bashir” ranked #2 with A25-54 (195,000 vs. 190,000) and total viewers (811,000 vs. 649,000). Compared to 4Q11, MSNBC is up 103% in A25-54, posting more cable news program growth in the hour than any other cable news channel. MSNBC also grew 83% in total viewers and 109% among A18-34 over 4Q11, more growth than all other cable news programs in the hour combined.
“Weekends with Alex Witt” on Saturdays (7a-8a) has the best A25-54 delivery since 1Q08 and the best total viewer delivery since 2Q03. “Witt” is up 48% with A25-54 and 32% with total viewers over 4Q11, more growth than any other cable news program.
“Up w/Chris Hayes” on Saturdays (8a-10a) had the best A25-54 quarterly delivery since 4Q08 and best total viewer delivery since 1Q03. “Up” ranked #2 with total viewers (538,000 vs. 507,000) and tied CNN in A25-54 (189,0000). “Up” increased 91% in A25-54, 69% in total viewers and 100% in A18-34 over 4Q11, more growth than all other cable news programs in the time period combined.
Melissa Harris-Perry on Saturdays (10a – noon) had the show’s best quarterly A25-54 and total viewer delivery ever and best delivery in the time period among total viewer delivery since 4Q08. “MHP” gained 108% in A2554, up 78% with total viewers and up 194% in A18-34 from 4Q11, posting the more growth than all cable news programs in the time period combined.
On Sundays, “Up w/Chris Hayes” (8a-10a) had the best A25-54 and total viewer quarterly delivery since 2Q03. “Up” ranked #2 in A25-54 (167,000 vs. 150,000) and ranked #1 among A18-34 for the second straight quarter.
“Melissa Harris-Perry” on Sundays (10a-noon) viewer quarterly delivery in the time period since 2Q03. “MHP” ranked #2 in A25-54 (169,000 vs. 148,000) and ranked #1 in A18-34 for the second straight quarter.
“Weekends with Alex Witt” on Sundays (noon – 2p) had the best A25-54 and total viewer quarterly delivery in the time period since 4Q08. “Witt” ranked #1 with A18-34.
Among younger viewers A18-34, MSNBC Longform ranks #1 in Weekend Sales Prime (Sa/Su 7p-2a) for the 29th consecutive quarter.

  1. And here I was almost impressed with CNN’s fourth quarter performance. Now that I read MNSBC’s hour-by-hour takedown of CNN I realize just how bad the ratings are. Yeeks.
